Andrew Walton studied the violin under Richard Deakin at the Royal Northern College of Music and on graduating, joined the English Chamber Orchestra as co-principal second violin, appearing as soloist with the orchestra. He left the ECO in 1989 and began a free-lance career that encompassed principal work with many of the leading orchestras in the UK.
Following his passion for recorded sound, he bought an early digital audio workstation, taught himself to edit and was surprised to find himself quickly in demand as an editor and soon after, producer.
Since then he has produced literally hundreds of recordings worldwide for the industry’s most prestigious labels and has won numerous international awards, the most recent being the 2011 Gramophone Award for best orchestral recording (Naxos: Shostakovich Symphony No.10/RLPO/Petrenko).
He has a particularly close relationship with the London Philharmonic Orchestra’s own label and was delighted to be invited by them this year to produce the official CD for the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee. Other recent releases have been recordings of Delius: Mass of Life with the BSO/Hill which has attracted unanimous critical acclaim and recent projects have included recordings with Nicola Benedetti and Janine Jansens for Decca.
